Search Finnish Companies by Name or Business ID

A Finnish Business ID, also known as a Y-tunnus, uniquely identifies a business or organization in Finland. The company search allows you to find businesses using information supplied through official Finnish open-data services.

Depending on the information available from PRH, company research may include:

  • official company name;
  • Finnish Business ID;
  • company form;
  • registration date;
  • Trade Register information;
  • municipality and address information;
  • main business line;
  • TOL or industry classification;
  • registration status;
  • company-name history;
  • registration memberships;
  • registered company changes and notifications.

The tool automatically recognizes properly formatted Finnish Business IDs and can perform an exact company lookup where supported by the official data source.

Finnish Trade Register and Company Information

The Finnish Trade Register contains official information about businesses and organizations registered in Finland. Company records can provide considerably more research value than a simple company-name lookup.

The research workspace organizes available registry information into practical sections so that changes in company identity, registration status, business activity and other official details can be reviewed more efficiently.

Where historical information is available, the application can help identify events such as company-name changes, company-form changes, registration changes and other official company updates.

Company Registration and Registry Intelligence

Finnish companies may appear in several official registers depending on their activities and legal circumstances. Available information can include participation in registers such as the Trade Register, VAT Register, Prepayment Register and Employer Register.

The tool presents available registration information with relevant dates rather than reducing company status to a single unexplained label.

This is especially useful when researching the history of a company or establishing whether particular registration information was current during a specific period.

Company Timeline

The company timeline brings together useful dated information from the official source into a chronological research view.

Depending on the company and available records, timeline events may include:

  • company registration;
  • changes of registered name;
  • company-form changes;
  • address changes;
  • register additions and removals;
  • registered Trade Register notifications;
  • financial reporting periods.

Routine administrative changes should not automatically be interpreted as positive or negative financial events. The timeline is intended to help researchers understand the development of a company, not to assign a credit or risk rating.

Finnish Financial Statements

Where a company has submitted a digital financial statement that is available through PRH Open Data, the application can provide a substantially deeper accounting view.

Available structured financial information may include data from the:

  • Profit and Loss Account; and
  • Balance Sheet.

The financial statement explorer is designed to retain the structure and accounting meaning of the underlying filing while presenting the information in a more readable research format.

Users may be able to compare reporting periods, inspect statement rows, review accounting values and examine the original taxonomy information behind structured financial facts.

Important Limitation of Finnish Open Financial Data

Not every Finnish company has an open digital financial statement available through this service. PRH’s open financial-statement interface primarily contains financial statements submitted digitally in iXBRL format and therefore covers only part of Finnish financial reporting.

If no digital statement is found, this does not mean that the company failed to prepare financial statements or that no financial statement exists elsewhere. It means only that an open digital financial statement was not found through the PRH interface used by this research tool.

The company-search and registry features therefore remain useful even when financial-statement data are unavailable.

Financial Statement Analysis

When the required accounting values can be identified reliably from a company’s structured filing, the tool can calculate additional analytical information.

Depending on data availability, analysis may include:

  • revenue;
  • operating profit;
  • net profit or loss;
  • total assets;
  • equity;
  • liabilities;
  • cash;
  • current assets;
  • current liabilities;
  • working capital.

The application does not invent missing accounting values. A metric is presented only where the underlying structured financial data can be mapped with sufficient reliability.

Accounting Ratios

Financial ratios can help make financial statements easier to compare across reporting periods. When all required inputs are available, the tool may calculate ratios covering profitability, liquidity and capital structure.

Examples can include:

  • operating margin;
  • net profit margin;
  • current ratio;
  • working capital;
  • liabilities-to-assets ratio;
  • liabilities-to-equity ratio;
  • equity ratio;
  • revenue growth;
  • asset growth;
  • equity growth;
  • profit growth.

Ratios are calculated deterministically from available financial-statement values. Missing inputs are not replaced with estimated figures or artificial zero values.

Accounting Trends and Financial Analysis

For companies with multiple available reporting periods, the application can highlight meaningful changes in financial performance and financial position.

Examples of accounting observations may include:

  • revenue increased or declined;
  • operating profit improved or deteriorated;
  • operating margin expanded or compressed;
  • the company returned to profit;
  • the company moved from profit to loss;
  • equity increased or decreased;
  • equity became negative;
  • working capital improved or weakened;
  • current liabilities exceeded current assets;
  • total assets expanded or contracted.

These observations describe changes in reported accounting information. They are not investment recommendations, audit opinions, credit ratings, bankruptcy predictions or fraud assessments.

Financial Trend Charts

Where several financial periods are available, charts can make longer-term movements easier to identify.

Depending on available data, trends may be shown for:

  • revenue;
  • operating profit;
  • net income;
  • assets;
  • equity;
  • liabilities;
  • working capital;
  • profit margins;
  • selected accounting ratios.

Financial periods are identified using their actual reporting dates rather than assuming that every Finnish company follows a calendar financial year.

Compare Finnish Companies

The comparison workspace can be used to examine several companies side by side. This can be helpful when researching competitors, businesses operating in the same industry or companies with similar registration characteristics.

Available comparisons can include company form, registration date, industry, location, registry status, availability of financial statements and selected accounting metrics.

If financial information is unavailable for one company, the application displays the absence of data rather than treating the missing value as zero.

Find Similar Finnish Companies

Official business-line classifications can also help identify companies operating in similar fields. Where supported by the source data, similar-company research can consider characteristics such as industry classification, company form and location.

This provides a useful starting point for market research without attempting to reproduce the entire Finnish company register locally.

Who Can Use This Finnish Company Research Tool?

This resource may be particularly useful for:

  • accountants reviewing company information;
  • auditors performing preliminary company research;
  • financial analysts studying Finnish businesses;
  • students learning financial statement analysis;
  • researchers studying Finnish companies and industries;
  • suppliers performing basic company research;
  • business owners examining competitors;
  • investors reviewing publicly available accounting information.

Understanding Finnish Business IDs

A Finnish Business ID is generally written in the format 1234567-8. The final digit is a checksum used to validate the identifier.

The research tool checks the structure and checksum of Business IDs before performing an exact lookup. This helps identify typing errors before unnecessary requests are sent to the official service.

What Is iXBRL?

Inline XBRL, commonly written as iXBRL, is a structured reporting format that allows financial-statement information to contain machine-readable accounting data.

Instead of treating a financial statement only as a document for human reading, XBRL identifies accounting facts using taxonomy concepts, reporting periods, units and other structured information.

This structure makes it possible to build tools for financial-statement comparison, trend analysis and accounting calculations while retaining links to the underlying reported facts.

Accounting Data Provenance

Advanced users may inspect accounting-data details behind financial information presented by the application. Depending on the filing, these details can include the source taxonomy concept, reporting period, unit, original reported value and taxonomy information.

This provenance is important because calculated analytics should remain traceable to the company’s underlying structured financial statement.
